Chapter Exercises
7.1: Distinguishing Group Work from Casework in a Group
Purpose
To help participants distinguish between individual problem solving based on mutual aid from individual problem solving in the presence of an âaudienceâ (other group members).
Learning Value
Opportunity to compare both the tone and dynamics of individual problem solving based on mutual aid with an approach that does not prioritize mutual aid.
Duration
About 60 to 90 minutes
Whatâs Required
Appendix G: Case Record: Group Work v. Casework in a GroupâJim Part I/Jim Part II
Appendix H: Case Record: Group Work v. Casework in a GroupâSara
Appendix I: Skills for Catalyzing Mutual Aid During Individual Problem Solving
Instructor Directions
Part A
1. Distribute Appendix G.
2. One participant reads Jim, Part I aloud while everyone else follows along.
3. Immediately thereafter another participant reads Jim, Part II aloud while everyone else follows along.
4. Participants assess the difference between the two scenarios in relation to:
A. The degree to which members of Jimâs group engage in self-reference and self-reflection (story sharing).
B. The degree to which the details of Jimâs problem are revealed.
C. The level of empathy (group climate) toward Jimâs situation by his co-members.
D. The quality of problem solving that takes place.
Part B
1. Instructor reads Sara aloud while everyone else follows along.
2. Using the previous analysis of Jim as a framework, participants assess the quality of problem solving in the Sara case example.
Part C
1. Distribute and briefly review Appendix I.
2. Using Appendix I as reference participants practice worker statements in a hypothetical ânextâ meeting of Saraâs group that are intended to catalyze mutual aid during the problem-solving process that examines her situation.
Outcome
At the end of this exercise participants are better able to identify the skills and strategies for helping a group maintain mutual aid even when the focus is on one individualâs particular situation.
